Medicine safety

Can I take antimalarial medicine with my other medications?

Some antimalarials interact with common medicines and can affect the heart rhythm, so always tell the prescriber what else you take, including supplements, before starting.

Antimalarial drugs vary in their interactions. Some, such as those affecting heart rhythm, can be risky when combined with other medicines that have the same effect, and certain antimalarials interact with epilepsy drugs, some antibiotics, and indigestion remedies that reduce their absorption. Effectiveness can also be reduced if doses are taken with the wrong timing relative to food or antacids.

Whether for prevention while travelling or for treatment, the right antimalarial depends on the region, your health conditions, pregnancy status, and your other medicines, so this should be chosen with a doctor or travel clinic.

Give a full medicine and supplement list before starting, take the course exactly as directed, and complete prophylaxis for the full period after travel. Seek urgent care for a high fever during or after travel to a malaria area, as malaria can be life-threatening.
