What it is used for
- Oral thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth)
- Fungal infections of the mouth and throat
- Yeast infections in other areas (with appropriate formulations)
How it works
Nystatin binds to and damages the cell membrane of the yeast Candida, killing it. The oral suspension acts directly on the yeast in the mouth and throat and is not significantly absorbed into the body.
How it is taken
Comes as an oral liquid (suspension), and in other forms such as creams and pastilles. For oral thrush, the liquid is held in the mouth and swished around to coat the affected areas before swallowing or spitting as directed, usually after meals. Wait a short time before eating or drinking afterwards so it stays in contact. Use it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist or the label directs, and continue the full course to prevent the infection returning.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Mild nausea
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Mild stomach upset or diarrhoea (uncommon)
Serious effects — get help
- Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, severe rash or difficulty breathing
- Severe or persistent diarrhoea or vomiting
- Worsening infection or difficulty swallowing despite treatment
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Generally few, as little is absorbed from the gut
- Other mouth products (ask a pharmacist about timing)
Who should take care
- Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Continue the full course even after symptoms ease
- Hold the liquid in the mouth and avoid eating or drinking immediately after, as directed
- See a clinician if oral thrush is recurrent or does not clear, as it may signal an underlying issue
- Clean dentures and feeding equipment to prevent reinfection where relevant
