Mometasone: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Nasonex, Asmanex, Nasometason.

Esta información es solo orientativa de carácter general y no constituye un consejo médico. Consulta siempre a un profesional sanitario cualificado para cualquier asunto médico personal. En caso de emergencia, llama al número de emergencias de tu zona.

What it is used for

  • Hay fever and persistent allergic rhinitis — nasal spray form
  • Nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose from allergy
  • Nasal polyps (in some cases)
  • Asthma (regular prevention) — inhaler form

How it works

Mometasone is a steroid that reduces inflammation in the lining of the nose or the airways. Used regularly, it calms swelling and sensitivity, easing nasal allergy symptoms or helping prevent asthma symptoms.

How it is taken

Available as a nasal spray for allergies and an inhaler (preventer) for asthma. Both are used regularly rather than for instant relief. Use it exactly as your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist directs. With the nasal spray, aim away from the central wall of the nose to reduce irritation.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Dry or irritated nose, mild nosebleeds (nasal spray)
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal stinging or burning
  • Oral thrush or hoarseness (inhaler)

Serious effects — get help

  • Repeated or heavy nosebleeds, or a sore inside the nose that will not heal
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling, breathing difficulty)
  • Eye problems such as blurred vision (rare, with long-term use)
  • Symptoms of adrenal effects with high long-term doses

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Certain antifungal and some HIV medicines that can raise steroid levels
  • Other steroid medicines
  • Tell your clinician about all your medicines

Who should take care

  • Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Use it regularly as prescribed for it to work, even when symptoms are mild
  • Aim the nasal spray correctly to reduce nosebleeds and irritation
  • Rinse your mouth after inhaler use
  • Tell any clinician you use a nasal or inhaled steroid

Frequently asked questions

How long until the nasal spray helps my hay fever?
It can take a few days of regular use to reach full effect, so use it consistently rather than only when symptoms flare.
Why am I getting nosebleeds?
Mild nosebleeds and dryness can happen. Aiming the spray away from the central wall of the nose helps. Tell your clinician if bleeding is heavy or frequent.
Is the nasal spray addictive?
Steroid nasal sprays like mometasone are not addictive and can be used regularly under guidance, unlike some decongestant sprays.
Can I use it every day in allergy season?
Daily use as directed is typical for ongoing allergic rhinitis. Follow your clinician's or the label's instructions.
Is Mometasone safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
