Antispasmodic (antimuscarinic)

Hyoscine Butylbromide: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Buscopan.

Esta información es solo orientativa de carácter general y no constituye un consejo médico. Consulta siempre a un profesional sanitario cualificado para cualquier asunto médico personal. En caso de emergencia, llama al número de emergencias de tu zona.

What it is used for

  • Stomach and gut cramps
  • Cramping pain from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Period-related and bladder cramps
  • Spasm during some medical procedures

How it works

Hyoscine butylbromide relaxes the smooth muscle of the gut and other organs, relieving the painful squeezing and cramping that cause colicky discomfort.

How it is taken

Comes as tablets and an injectable form used in healthcare settings. The tablets are taken by mouth. Take it exactly as the label or your clinician directs, and do not use it continuously for unexplained ongoing pain without assessment.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Difficulty passing urine

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe eye pain or sudden vision changes (possible acute glaucoma)
  • Inability to pass urine
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat with chest discomfort
  • Severe allergic reaction

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Other antimuscarinic medicines (some antidepressants, certain bladder and Parkinson's drugs) — added dry mouth, constipation, etc.
  • Medicines affecting heart rate

Who should take care

  • Avoid or use with caution if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or urinary retention, or certain heart conditions
  • Tell your clinician about bowel narrowing or severe constipation
  • Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with a pharmacist
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain needs medical assessment, not just an antispasmodic

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does it relieve cramps?
It often eases cramping within about 15 to 30 minutes. Follow the label for how often to take it.
Can I take it for IBS?
It is commonly used for IBS-type cramps. If symptoms are new, severe, or changing, see a clinician first.
Will it make me drowsy?
The tablet form generally does not enter the brain much, so drowsiness is less likely, but blurred vision can occur.
Can I take it with other stomach medicines?
Often yes, but tell your pharmacist everything you take, especially other antimuscarinic medicines.
Is Hyoscine Butylbromide safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
