Fusidic acid: uses, side effects & precautions

Also known as Fucidin, Fucidin H (with hydrocortisone).

Esta información es solo orientativa de carácter general y no constituye un consejo médico. Consulta siempre a un profesional sanitario cualificado para cualquier asunto médico personal. En caso de emergencia, llama al número de emergencias de tu zona.

What it is used for

  • Impetigo
  • Infected eczema and dermatitis
  • Minor infected wounds and skin infections
  • Infected cuts and grazes

How it works

Fusidic acid stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply, helping clear the skin infection.

How it is taken

Supplied as a skin cream or ointment, sometimes combined with a mild steroid for infected inflamed skin. Apply to the affected area exactly as your doctor or the label directs, usually after gently cleaning the skin. It is typically a prescription medicine; complete the full course your clinician provides.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Common side effects

  • Mild burning or stinging at the site
  • Redness or itching of the treated skin

Serious effects — get help

  • Severe or spreading skin reaction or blistering
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, hives or difficulty breathing

If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.

Interactions to watch

  • Other creams or ointments on the same area used at the same time

Who should take care

  • Tell your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Avoid getting it in the eyes unless using an eye-specific product
  • Use only the prescribed course to help limit antibiotic resistance
  • Return to your clinician if the infection spreads or does not improve within a few days

Frequently asked questions

What is the version combined with hydrocortisone for?
Combination products treat skin that is both inflamed and infected, such as some flares of infected eczema. A clinician decides whether you need the combined form.
Can I keep leftover cream for next time?
No. Antibiotics should be used only for the infection they were prescribed for, and reusing leftovers encourages resistance.
How quickly should it work?
Many infections start to improve within a few days. If yours is not improving or is spreading, see your clinician.
Is it safe around the eyes?
Skin products are not for use inside the eye. There are separate fusidic acid eye preparations for eye infections.
