What it is used for
- Dry eyes
- Eye discomfort, grittiness or burning from reduced tear production
- Tear-film support in conditions causing dry eye
How it works
Carbomer is a thick, water-based gel that mimics natural tears, coating the surface of the eye to keep it moist and reduce the gritty, dry feeling. It does not treat an underlying cause but soothes and protects the eye surface.
How it is taken
Comes as a clear eye gel (and similar lubricant drops). A small amount is placed into the affected eye(s). Wash your hands first and keep the nozzle from touching your eye. Use as often as needed for comfort within the limits your pharmacist or label gives. Apply other eye medicines first and the gel last, spacing them apart, and ask a pharmacist about contact lenses.
No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.
Common side effects
- Temporary blurred or sticky vision after applying
- Mild stinging on application
- Eyelids feeling slightly tacky
Serious effects — get help
- Signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling, severe rash or breathing difficulty
- Worsening eye pain, redness or vision changes (which may signal a different problem needing assessment)
If a reaction is severe — for example trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse — go to the nearest emergency room now or call your local emergency number. Do not wait for an online consultation.
Interactions to watch
- Other eye drops (apply the gel last and space applications apart)
- Contact lenses (many gels are not for use with lenses; check the label)
Who should take care
- Persistent dry eye should be assessed by a clinician to find the cause
- If your vision is affected, wait until it clears before driving
- Discard after the opened-bottle period on the label
- Tell a pharmacist if symptoms do not improve
