Acne

Why do I still get acne as an adult?

Adult acne is common and is driven by hormones, oil production, clogged pores and bacteria; stress, some cosmetics and certain medicines or conditions can make it worse.

Acne is not just a teenage problem. Many adults, particularly women, get breakouts because hormonal fluctuations (around periods, pregnancy, or with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome) increase oil production and pore blockage. Genetics, stress, sleep, some skincare and make-up products, and certain medications can also play a role.

Adult acne often shows up along the jawline, chin and lower face, and can range from blackheads and whiteheads to deeper, tender cysts. Picking or squeezing tends to worsen inflammation and scarring.

Gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) products and patience usually help, and a pharmacist can suggest suitable over-the-counter options. If acne is persistent, painful, scarring, or affecting your confidence, see a doctor; prescription treatments and assessment for underlying hormonal causes may be appropriate. Avoid self-prescribing strong or systemic treatments, and always get pregnancy-safe advice if you could be pregnant. This is general information only.
