Dry & itchy skin

What is a good skincare routine for sensitive skin?

Keep it simple: a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, a bland moisturiser, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, and introduce any new product slowly with a patch test.

Sensitive skin generally does best with a minimal, gentle routine. Cleanse once or twice a day with a mild, fragrance-free, non-foaming or low-foaming cleanser using lukewarm (not hot) water, and avoid harsh scrubs and physical exfoliants that can damage the barrier. Follow with a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser to support the skin barrier and reduce reactivity.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is important, and mineral (zinc or titanium) formulations are often better tolerated by reactive skin. When trying anything new, introduce one product at a time and consider a patch test on a small area for a few days, so you can identify the culprit if a reaction occurs. Be cautious with strong actives, fragrances and essential oils.

If your skin is persistently red, itchy, stinging or breaking out, you may have an underlying condition such as eczema, rosacea or contact dermatitis that benefits from specific treatment. A pharmacist can recommend suitable products, and a doctor can help if simple measures are not enough. This is general information only.
