Also known as Zaditen, Zaditor, Alaway.

What it is used for

  • Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, red, watery eyes from allergy)
  • Eye symptoms of hay fever

How it works

Ketotifen blocks histamine, which causes allergic itch and redness, and also helps stop eye cells from releasing more allergy chemicals. This relieves and helps prevent itchy, red, watery eyes caused by allergies.

How it is taken

Comes as eye drops, including over-the-counter products. A drop is placed into the affected eye(s). Wash your hands first and keep the dropper tip clean. Use it exactly as your pharmacist or the label directs. If you wear soft contact lenses, ask a pharmacist about timing before reinserting them.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Many people feel relief within minutes to a few hours, and regular use also helps prevent symptoms. If relief does not come, check with a pharmacist.
Can I use it throughout allergy season?
It can be used regularly during allergy season when advised. Follow the duration on your label or from your pharmacist.
Can I wear contact lenses with it?
Do not apply while wearing soft lenses unless told it is fine. Ask your pharmacist how long to wait before reinserting them.

Both relieve eye allergy symptoms by similar means. Your pharmacist can help you pick one based on availability and how often you would use it.
Is Ketotifen safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
