What it is used for

  • Type 2 diabetes (to lower blood sugar)
  • Heart failure (to reduce risk of worsening)
  • Chronic kidney disease (to slow progression, in selected patients)

How it works

Dapagliflozin makes the kidneys pass extra sugar out in the urine, lowering blood sugar. It also offers heart and kidney protection demonstrated in clinical studies.

How it is taken

Available as tablets taken by mouth, usually once a day, and in combination tablets with metformin. Take it exactly as your doctor, pharmacist, or the label directs, and keep well hydrated.

Common side effects

  • Genital yeast or fungal infections (thrush)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Passing more urine, increased thirst
  • Dizziness from mild dehydration

Serious effects — get help

  • Diabetic ketoacidosis, which can occur even with near-normal blood sugar (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fast/deep breathing, confusion) — emergency care needed
  • Rare serious genital/perineal infection (Fournier's gangrene) with severe pain, swelling, and redness — emergency care needed
  • Severe dehydration or very low blood pressure

Interactions to watch

  • Diuretics (water tablets) — added dehydration risk
  • Insulin and sulfonylureas (added low-blood-sugar risk)
  • Some blood-pressure medicines
  • Alcohol (raises risk of dehydration and ketoacidosis)

  • Stay well hydrated, especially in hot weather, illness, or vomiting/diarrhoea
  • May need pausing during serious illness, before surgery, or when not eating — follow medical advice
  • Maintain genital hygiene and report recurrent infections
  • Generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised
  • Be alert for ketoacidosis symptoms even with normal-looking blood sugar
