What it is used for

  • Helping ovulation in some people who are not ovulating regularly, including some with polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Investigation and treatment of certain types of infertility (under specialist care)

How it works

It acts on the brain's hormone signals to encourage the ovaries to develop and release an egg, helping ovulation occur in some people who do not ovulate regularly.

How it is taken

Taken as a tablet for a set number of days early in the menstrual cycle, under medical supervision. Take it exactly as your fertility clinician directs, often with monitoring such as scans or blood tests.

No doses here on purpose. The right strength and schedule depend on you — only a doctor or pharmacist should set them. Always follow your prescription and the label.

Frequently asked questions

Does it guarantee pregnancy?
No. It helps ovulation in suitable people, which can improve the chance of conceiving, but it does not work for everyone.
Will it cause twins?
It raises the chance of twins or more, which is why monitoring is important during treatment.
What are the vision warnings?
Some people get blurred vision or flashes. Tell your clinician promptly, as treatment may need to stop.
How many cycles can I use it?
It is usually limited to a number of cycles under specialist guidance. Your clinician will advise next steps if it does not work.
Is Clomifene safe to take?
For most people it is safe when taken exactly as a doctor or pharmacist advises and as printed on the label. Tell your clinician about your other medicines and health conditions, and seek urgent care for any serious reaction.
