Sleep

Why can't I sleep at night even when I'm exhausted?

Being tired but unable to sleep often comes from a racing mind, stress or anxiety, irregular sleep timing, caffeine or screens late in the day, or an overactive stress response. Persistent insomnia is worth discussing with a doctor.

Feeling exhausted yet wide awake usually means your body is tired but your nervous system is still switched on. Stress and anxiety are common culprits, keeping the mind racing and stress hormones elevated when you should be winding down. Irregular bedtimes, daytime napping, caffeine or alcohol later in the day, and bright screens before bed all disrupt the natural signals that prepare you for sleep.

Sometimes the harder you try to sleep, the more alert you become, creating a frustrating cycle. Lying awake worrying about not sleeping then becomes its own trigger. Underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, pain, or conditions like restless legs or sleep apnoea can also keep you awake despite tiredness.

If this happens occasionally, improving your wind-down routine and sleep timing often helps. If poor sleep lasts more than a few weeks or affects your daytime functioning, see a doctor. They can look for underlying causes and recommend approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, which is the first-line treatment, rather than relying on sleeping tablets.
