Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disorder where the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and often rapidly. Symptoms can include an irregular or racing pulse, palpitations, breathlessness, tiredness, dizziness and reduced exercise tolerance. Many people have no symptoms and it is found by chance during a pulse or blood pressure check.

The main concern with AF is that it can allow blood clots to form in the heart, which raises the risk of stroke. Because of this, doctors assess each person's stroke risk and often consider blood-thinning treatment alongside controlling the heart rate or rhythm.

If you notice a persistently irregular pulse or the symptoms above, see a doctor for an ECG. Seek emergency care if AF comes with chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting. Do not start or stop any blood thinner or heart medicine without medical advice.
