Some foods carry a higher risk of infections like listeria, salmonella, or toxoplasmosis, which can be more serious in pregnancy. These include raw or undercooked meat and eggs, cold cured meats in some guidance, unpasteurised milk and cheeses, mould-ripened soft cheeses, and pre-prepared chilled foods that aren't reheated thoroughly.

Limit fish high in mercury (such as shark, swordfish, and king mackerel) and be moderate with tuna. Avoid liver and high-dose vitamin A products because excess vitamin A can harm the baby. Wash fruit and vegetables well.

Alcohol is best avoided entirely, as no safe level has been established. Guidance differs slightly by country, so check local recommendations. If you accidentally ate something on the avoid list, don't panic, but watch for symptoms like fever or vomiting and contact your provider if you feel unwell.
