Bloating & gas

What causes excessive burping and belching?

Most burping comes from swallowing air while eating or drinking quickly, having fizzy drinks, or chewing gum. Frequent burping with other digestive symptoms can be linked to indigestion or reflux.

Belching is the body's way of releasing swallowed air from the stomach. You swallow more air when you eat or drink fast, talk while eating, drink carbonated beverages, chew gum, smoke, or feel anxious. This is usually harmless even if frequent.

To reduce it, eat and drink more slowly, avoid fizzy drinks and gum, do not gulp, and manage stress. If burping comes with heartburn, an acid taste, or upper tummy discomfort, it may be part of indigestion or acid reflux, which respond to smaller meals, fewer trigger foods, and, if needed, advice from a pharmacist.

See a doctor if excessive burping is accompanied by persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, ongoing upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or if it is new and troublesome, so causes such as reflux disease or stomach problems can be assessed.
