People at risk may speak about wanting to die, feeling trapped, hopeless, or being a burden to others. They may withdraw from friends and family, lose interest in things they cared about, change sleep or eating patterns, increase alcohol or drug use, or take more risks than usual. Some give away treasured possessions or say goodbye in unusual ways. A sudden sense of calm after a period of deep depression can sometimes mean a person has decided on a plan, so it should not be assumed to be recovery.

If you are worried about someone, ask them directly and calmly whether they are thinking about suicide. Asking does not plant the idea; it often brings relief and opens a conversation. Listen without judgment, take what they say seriously, and help them connect with support.

If someone is in immediate danger, has a plan, or has access to means of harm, do not leave them alone. Call your local emergency number, take them to an emergency department, or contact a crisis line straight away. For ongoing risk, urge them to see a doctor or mental health professional as soon as possible.
