What are the early warning signs of diabetes?

Common early signs include feeling very thirsty, passing urine more often (especially at night), tiredness, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, and slow-healing cuts. If you notice these, see a doctor for a blood sugar test.

Type 2 diabetes often develops slowly, so symptoms can be mild or easy to miss for years. The classic cluster is increased thirst, frequent urination, persistent fatigue, blurred vision, and recurrent infections such as thrush or urinary infections. Some people also notice tingling in the hands or feet or wounds that are slow to heal.

Type 1 diabetes usually comes on faster, over days to weeks, often with noticeable weight loss and more dramatic thirst and urination. Children and young adults are more commonly affected, though it can start at any age.

These symptoms are not proof of diabetes on their own, since other conditions can cause them. The only way to confirm a diagnosis is a blood test arranged by a clinician. If symptoms are severe or you feel very unwell, do not wait, seek medical care promptly.
