Some vaccines are actively recommended during pregnancy because they protect both you and your newborn. The inactivated flu vaccine is widely advised, and the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine is recommended in many countries during a specific window so antibodies pass to the baby before birth. Other vaccines such as RSV or COVID-19 may be advised depending on local guidance.

Live vaccines (such as MMR and chickenpox) are generally not given during pregnancy and are usually offered before pregnancy or after birth instead.

Vaccine recommendations vary by country and by your individual health and travel plans, so discuss what is right for you with your doctor or midwife. If you are planning pregnancy, it is a good time to check that routine vaccinations are up to date beforehand.
