Antidepressants do not work instantly. Most people start to notice improvement within two to six weeks, with the full benefit sometimes taking longer. Early on, some side effects such as nausea, headache, or changes in sleep may appear before the mood benefits, which is normal and usually settles. This delay is one reason people sometimes stop too early, thinking the medicine is not helping.

Finding the right medicine and dose can take time, and a doctor may adjust treatment if there is little improvement after several weeks. It is important to keep taking the medication as prescribed and to attend follow-ups, especially in the first few weeks when it is helpful to monitor how you are responding.

Do not stop antidepressants suddenly or change the dose on your own, as this can cause unpleasant discontinuation effects and a return of symptoms. If you want to stop, or you have troubling side effects, speak to your doctor, who can guide a safe, gradual plan. Seek urgent help if your mood worsens or you have thoughts of self-harm after starting any new medication.
