How can I prevent heart disease?

Lower your heart disease risk by not smoking, staying active, eating a heart-healthy diet, keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar in range, limiting alcohol, and managing stress and weight.

Cardiovascular disease is largely preventable. The biggest levers are stopping smoking, being physically active most days, eating more vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats while cutting salt, sugar, and ultra-processed foods, and keeping a healthy weight. Limiting alcohol and getting enough sleep also help.

Just as important is controlling the silent risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar. Regular checks catch these early, and lifestyle changes, sometimes with medication prescribed by a doctor, keep them in target ranges. Knowing your family history helps gauge your baseline risk.

Many clinics use a cardiovascular risk score to guide whether preventive medication, such as a statin, is worthwhile. This is an individual decision made with a doctor. Seek emergency care for chest pain or pressure, breathlessness, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, or sudden weakness, as these can signal a heart attack or stroke.
