Sleeping medicines such as benzodiazepines, so-called z-drugs (like zolpidem), and sedating over-the-counter sleep aids all slow brain activity. Alcohol adds to this depressant effect, which can lead to extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, dangerously slowed breathing, and an increased risk of accidents and falls.

The combination can also cause unusual behaviours during sleep, such as walking or eating without memory of it, and in serious cases can be life-threatening. The risk is higher in older adults and people with breathing conditions.

Do not drink alcohol when taking sleep medication. Seek emergency care for very slow or shallow breathing, unresponsiveness, or someone who cannot be woken; call your local emergency number.
